Phillip Joel Hughes was born on 30 November 1988 into a banana-farming dad Greg and an Italian mom Virginia in Macksville, a little northern New South Wales town of just 2,500 inhabitants on the Nambucca River midway between Brisbane and Sydney.
A 12-year old Hughes was already making significant strides in the cricket field, making his debut for the Macksville R.S.L. Cricket Club’s A-Class team, where he played until he was 17, when the glowing lights of Sydney beckoned.
